The St. Andrews Lodge Historical and Cultural Society is a grass-roots coalition of volunteers formed when the Qualicum Beach Town Council reversed its decision to demolish historic St. Andrews Lodge in November, 2020. The Lodge’s beautiful simplicity and solid construction have withstood the test of time, hosting guests and creating memories since 1938.
But it isn’t just the Lodge that the Society plans to restore and preserve. It is also the legacy of the Little family that built and operated St. Andrews for more than 80 years that deserves acknowledgement. The family’s contributions to community life are legion, yet they are almost forgotten.
In restoring and preserving the Lodge the Society will honour a building and family that helped form the cornerstone of the tourism trade in our small town. Tourism has flourished and is the mainstay of the local economy, thanks in part to the Littles and the Lodge.

L’association St. Andrews Lodge Historical and Cultural Society est une coalition citoyenne de bénévoles qui s’est formée lorsque le conseil municipal de Qualicum Beach a annulé sa décision concernant la démolition de l’emblématique pavillon St. Andrews Lodge en novembre 2020. L’esthétique simplicité et la solide construction du pavillon a résisté à l’épreuve du temps, et accueille des visiteurs et génère des souvenirs depuis 1938.
Mais l’association ne souhaite pas seulement restaurer et préserver le pavillon. Pour elle, c’est également l’héritage de la famille Little, qui a construit et géré le pavillon pendant plus de 80 ans, qui mérite d’être reconnu. Les contributions de la famille à la vie de la communauté sont légion, et pour autant presque oubliées.
La restauration et la préservation du pavillon permettront à l’association d’honorer un bâtiment et une famille qui ont formé la pierre angulaire de l’industrie touristique de notre petite ville. Le tourisme s’est développé et constitue aujourd’hui une part importante de l’économie locale, grâce aux contributions de la famille Little et du pavillon.

The storied history of St. Andrews Lodge already speaks to its past impact, but the Lodge continues to influence community life in Qualicum Beach in many ways. The St. Andrews Lodge Historical and Cultural Society (SALHACS) has become a community in itself, attracting hundreds of volunteers. The long-term goal of the Society is to continue that level of co-operation as well as to open the Lodge to the general public. The building, once restored, will be available to community groups for public meetings, educational purposes, social gatherings, workshops and a host of other community activities. The creation of wheelchair access will ensure that the Society’s motto – Open to All - is honoured. The Society also collaborates with many other community groups, including the Qualicum Beach Historical and Museum Society, which was founded by Lodge owner Elizabeth Little. The local Town Council, MLA, Oceanside Community Safety and Chamber of Commerce also support SALHACS efforts. Although the Lodge is not currently available for public use the Society regularly sponsors a very popular Summer Twilight Concert Series and an annual Arts and Music Festival in the adjacent waterfront park. Admission to the concerts is by donation, making it affordable for all.

La riche histoire du pavillon St. Andrews Lodge évoque l’importance de son passé, mais le pavillon continue d’influencer la vie de la communauté à Qualicum Beach de bien des manières. Son association, la St. Andrews Lodge Historical and Cultural Society (SALHACS), est devenue une communauté elle-même, attirant des centaines de volontaires. L’objectif à long terme de l’association : poursuivre sur ce niveau de coopération, ainsi que d’ouvrir le pavillon au public. La communauté, une fois le bâtiment restauré, pourra y accéder pour des réunions publiques, des objectifs éducatifs, des événements sociaux, des ateliers et tout autre événement communautaire. La création d’un accès pour les personnes en fauteuil permettra d’honorer la devise de l’association « Open to all », soit Ouverte à tous. L’association collabore également avec de nombreux autres groupes communautaires, comme l’association Qualicum Beach Historical and Museum Society, fondée par Elizabeth Little, propriétaire du pavillon. Le conseil municipal local, MLA, Oceanside Community Safety et la Chambre de commerce soutiennent les efforts de la SALHACS. Bien que le pavillon ne soit pas présentement disponible pour l’usage du public, son association organise régulièrement une série de concerts très populaires pendant l’été et un festival d’arts et de musique dans le parc au bord de l’eau adjacent. St. Andrews Lodge is the only remaining vestige of the early tourism trade in Qualicum Beach. Many successive generations of guests were regular visitors to the waterfront Lodge built by the Little family, beginning on August 1, 1938. The Lodge was the cornerstone of the tourism trade in the area; it continues to contribute to the local economy as descendants of those early visitors return to vacation in Qualicum Beach.
The Little family made many significant contributions to the community over the course of the 80 years that they operated the Lodge. Sam Little was a noted architect who designed many local public buildings, the Town crest, 60 homes and a church that became the template for small churches all over Canada. Sam’s daughter Elizabeth was a revered community leader whose contributions were so vast that she was named first Freeman of the Town, a lifetime member of the Chamber of Commerce and Citizen of the Year. When she passed away the Town flags flew at half-mast.
The Society aims to restore this beloved heritage building to provide visitors a glimpse into a simpler time and to honour the contributions of the Lodge and the Little family.

Le pavillon St. Andrews Lodge constitue le dernier vestige des balbutiements du tourisme à Qualicum Beach. De nombreuses générations de visiteurs se sont succédé, parfois régulièrement, dans ce pavillon qui borde l’eau construit par la famille Little, à compter du 1er août 1938. Le pavillon était la pierre angulaire du tourisme dans la région, et poursuit sa contribution à l’économie locale en faisant revenir les descendants de ses premiers visiteurs à Qualicum Beach.
Au cours de ses 80 années de gestion du pavillon, la famille Little a effectué de nombreuses et importantes contributions envers la communauté. Sam Little était un architecte reconnu qui a conçu de nombreux bâtiments publics, les armoiries de la ville, 60 maisons et une église qui servit de modèles pour de nombreuses petites églises partout au Canada. Elizabeth, la fille de Sam, était une dirigeante communautaire appréciée, dont les contributions ont été si importantes qu’elle a été nommée première citoyenne d’honneur de la ville, membre à vie de la Chambre de commerce et Citoyenne de l’année. À sa mort, les drapeaux de la ville ont été mis en berne.
L’association souhaite restaurer ce bâtiment patrimonial apprécié de tous, afin d’offrir aux visiteurs un aperçu de temps plus simples et d’honorer les contributions du pavillon et de la famille Little.
